Erno Laszlo was the progenitor of modern skincare: most contemporary skincare products and philosophies owe something to the Hungarian visionary and his eponymous brand.

About Erno Laszlo

Eighty years ago, Hungarian dermatologist Erno Laszlo was the first doctor to create his own line of medically based skincare products. His revolutionary idea of following a skincare routine based on one’s skin type still proves effective today, and potent new formulas continue his tradition of cutting-edge skincare.

The man behind it all, Dr. Erno Laszlo, was a Hungarian dermatologist—the first to combine the exact science of his profession with the art of cosmetology. In 1927, he established his first institute in Budapest. It was a time when healthy, glowing skin was a fleeting dream; when facial imperfections were hidden rather than healed; and when women rarely realized their full beauty potential.

Not, that is, until Dr. Laszlo took his first leap into the business of beauty. The doctor's formulations and practices seemed radical for their day, but brought results so astounding that they bordered on the miraculous. Word of his treatments extraordinaire soon spread, and in 1939, to satisfy an ever-increasing demand, Dr. Laszlo opened his famed Fifth Avenue institute in New York City.

Today, every woman can experience the time-honored effectiveness and pure simplicity of this renowned skincare and color collection. Merging the most modern technologies with proven principles of the past, Erno Laszlo speaks to a new breed who practice—and believe in—the "ritual." Transcending the generations, Erno Laszlo brings perfect solutions to all skins, all ages.

Exclusivity

In 1939 Laszlo opened his institute on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan to an elite clientele. Not only were appointments difficult to get (99% of applicants were reportedly turned away), there was an air of secrecy about the doctor. The Duchess of Windsor called the institute “The House of Silence” because there were so many secrets kept within its walls.

Rich History

Erno Laszlo opened his first institute in Budapest in 1927, after healing the Hungarian Princess Stephanie’s skin. Less than ten years later, he was the country’s go-to dermatologist because of his effective treatments and strict skin-care regimes. In 1952 Laszlo launched his eponymous product line with fifteen products available exclusively at Saks Fifth Avenue. The line wasn’t available in any other retail stores until 1962.

Legendary Clients

Laszlo’s list of devotees reads like a roster of the iconic and famous: Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, and Madonna, just to name a few.

Woody Allen famously immortalized Laszlo’s Black Soap in the 1977 film, Annie Hall. He says, “I found this in the apartment. Black soap. She used to wash her face eight hundred times a day with black soap. Don't ask me why."

Generations of Fans

Forget family jewels: there is a tradition amongst clients to pass down his skin care secrets to their children and grandchildren. Jacqueline Kennedy brought her daughter to see Laszlo when she was just seven years old.
