The Buda obstetrician and gynecologist marched into the history of medicine as the savior of mothers: he cracked the etiology of the puerperal fever . He realized that an infectious disease is involved , which is the causative agent of decomposed organic matter , getting from the hands of the doctor into the women's vascular system . To prevent this he proposed the practice of handwashing with chlorinated lime solutions.
